Temperature gauge not working?

i have a 1993 chevrolet astro van and the temp gauge doesnt work when i start it it will move over to hot then right back to cold and stay there any suggestions of what it might be and another thing is heat only works through the defrost and in the floor vents but the dash vents wont work any ideas about that any input would be appreciated
