Good first car to buy new?

I need an AWD, and have a budget of 30k. I like the Chevrolet Equinox, and really can't find any other cars I think either look good or are reliable. What AWD cars can I buy w/ my budget & what kind would you recommend? Also, I have thought about possibly buying a certified used car. Are they more reliable than used? Pros/cons?
